Tea Distribution in Punjab: What City Gold Taught Us

Brand Stories3 min read

Tea is one of the most personal categories we distribute, and it's taught us more about brand loyalty than almost any other product line.

Punjab drinks a lot of tea, and people are particular about it — the strength, the taste, the brand their family has always bought. When we started distributing City Gold, it wasn't an easy sell in every market, because tea drinkers here are creatures of habit. Switching someone's tea brand is a bit like asking them to change something personal.

What worked wasn't aggressive pricing or big promotions. It was sampling — literally letting shopkeepers and, through them, regular customers, try a small amount before committing to a full purchase. Trust in tea gets built cup by cup, not through advertising.

City Gold's growth in our network followed a similar, patient pattern. Early on, in towns like Jagraon and Nagalbur, reorders were sporadic — customers would try it, like it, but not necessarily switch permanently right away. It took consistent shelf presence over several months before City Gold became a regular reorder item rather than an occasional one.

Here's what tea distribution has taught us that applies to almost any FMCG category: some products sell on price, some sell on convenience, but tea — much like ghee or masale — sells almost entirely on trust and habit. That means a distributor's job isn't just logistics. It's patiently earning a spot in someone's daily routine.

For any tea brand considering Punjab, understand this going in: the market rewards patience and consistency far more than it rewards a big, loud launch.
