Selling Biscuits in Punjab: What Anmol and Mario Taught Us About Fast-Moving Categories

Brand Stories4 min read

Biscuits move faster through our network than almost anything else we handle, and that speed teaches lessons that don't show up in slower categories.

Anmol and Mario are both strong performers for us, but they succeed for slightly different reasons, and understanding that difference has shaped how we think about fast-moving products generally.

Anmol's strength has always been price-point accessibility — the ₹5 and ₹10 packs move constantly, especially in high-footfall counters near schools, bus stands, and busy market corners. This taught us something important: in fast-moving categories, availability matters more than almost anything else. If a ₹5 biscuit pack is out of stock even for two days, a customer simply buys whatever alternative is sitting on the shelf instead. There's no brand loyalty strong enough to survive that kind of impatience for a small, habitual purchase.

Mario's growth, particularly in noodles and rusk, taught us a different lesson — the value of shelf visibility over price alone. In counters where Mario products were given prominent placement, near the counter or at eye level, sales consistently outperformed identical stores where the product sat in a less visible spot. For fast-moving categories, being seen matters almost as much as being available.

Both brands reinforced something we now build into every fast-moving category we handle: reorder frequency has to be tight, almost obsessively so. A slow-moving specialty product can tolerate a delayed restock. A fast-moving biscuit pack cannot — even a few days of being out of stock quietly trains a customer to buy something else, and that habit is hard to win back.

For any brand in a fast-moving category considering Punjab, this is the real lesson: your distribution partner's restocking discipline will matter more to your success than almost any other single factor.
